Abstract
Objective: In order to compare the incidence of caries and periodontal status in 12 year-olds in Korea and Laos, which have different socio-economic environments and diets. DMFT, PHP, CPI, and relative factors were examined in both countries.

Methods: 97 Korean students and 99 Laos students age 12 were selected for oral examination. DMFT and DMFS indexes with DT and FT rates were calculated. PHP with plaque dying and CPI were also estimated, and modified Snyder test was performed to test for caries activity. Questionnaires for tooth-brushing habits and dietary patterns to gauge sugar intake in food were administered.

Results: The daily frequency of tooth-brushing was higher in Korean students, and the amount of sugar contained in food eaten was higher in Laos. DMFT was higher in Korean students than in Laos, even though caries activity was lower in Korean students. FT rates were high in Korean students and DT rates were high in Laos (p<0.05). SiC as DMFT in caries high risk group of 1/3 was revealed as more in Korean students than in Laos, too. The PHP index and CPI revealed no significant differences between the two countries (p£¾0.05). CPITN was the higher in Laos students than in Korean.

Conclusion: A preventive program to decrease the incidence of caries (rather than the high level of FT as is presently advocated) should be established for Korean students, and early treatment with active preventative programs should be enacted for Laos students, to promote the oral health of both countries.
